HMS Echo visit Monaco April 2017 PDF Print E-mail

Royal Navy Visit - Hospitality.

HMS Echo, one of the Royal Navy’s Survey Ships, will visit Monaco Monday 24th to Friday 28th April, in  support of the International Hydrographic Conference being held in Monte-Carlo that week.  (Monaco is the world centre of nautical charting, being the seat since 1921 of the International Hydrographic Organization).

The 90-metre Echo will spend just a few days berthed in the port before resuming her work of updating Admiralty Charts of the Mediterranean, Red Sea and Indian Ocean. And saving migrants from drowning. There may be Survey Ships present from other IHO Member States.

Many members will remember the Echo’s port call here in October 2014 – the crew described it as a “Memorable visit”!  But many new faces onboard now.

This British ship will be busy displaying her advanced equipment to the foreign hydrographers attending the Conference, and the only Reception her captain and the Hydrographer of the Navy will host (26 April) is reserved for the many delegates from IHO Member States worldwide.  But the ship’s company do want to meet local British residents here and explore this small country: Monaco.

People wishing to “Meet the Navy” and able to show some of the crew around, on foot or by car or boat should contact Commander Michael Healy MBE on mhealy@orange.fr or Beverley Holt on Beverley@bandbinternational.com

First come, first served, preferably in the afternoon or evening. Any kind of invitation for these fine young people will be welcome:

Driving  2 or 3 at (fairly) high speed round the Formula 1 racetrack would be ideal, followed by a cup of tea or glass of wine. Or dinner.

Or driving up to Eze Village and browsing in the Fragonard perfume factory.  Monaco-Ville;  Monte-Carlo.

Bit of boating – mega-yachts are not quite the same as a warship!  But one BAM Member did buy a British survey ship and converted her to a superb 60-metre mega-yacht.

There will be events at local bars and also some fun activities like bowling, and hopefully tours of the Casino and Oceanographic museum.

Please email asap giving proposed date and time, what sort of sailors you would like to entertain (young men or ladies, senior or mixed), and your contact details with Mobile n°.

Hosts are likely to be invited onboard for a short private tour by their Royal Navy guests, but this cannot be guaranteed. The ship will not be open to the public.
